By “Bridging the Digital Gap,” Technology Assisting People In Need (TAPIN) aims to minimize the amount of computers and related technology being put in the landfills by enabling individuals and Corporate America to donate these items to TAPIN for a potential tax deduction. TAPIN can then use these units by testing the parts, erasing any and all data left on the hard drive with a computer program that meets U.S. Department of Defense standards (5220.22-M), using testing and diagnostic software to sort and separate computer components, and then reusing most components to put together working systems (monitor, computer, keyboard, mouse, cables, and/or printer). These machines or systems are then placed in the hands of individuals of need, and other organizations, non-profits and entities that help these types of individuals. Any components that are unrepairable or defective are then broken down and recycled in an environmentally friendly way. Technology Assisting People in Need’s repairing operations leaves the 3 R’s, or 3 distinct classes or groups of materials.
1) Repairable technology that is used for putting together computers for TAPIN’s clients. (Reducing)
2) Reclaimed parts from unrepairable machines that are reused. (Reusing)
3) Remaining materials, which are separated for environmentally friendly recycling. (Recycling)
Repairable technology is the computers and related parts that TAPIN receives by way of donations. This is TAPIN’s way for trying to reduce the amount of useful technology being put into the landfills, by giving individuals and Corporate America a place to donate this older technology for a useful and helpful cause. Reclaimed parts are any computer components from unrepairable machines that can be reused. This is TAPIN’s way of minimizing or reducing its own waste, by reusing good parts. Remaining materials are any parts, components, or pieces that are unrepairable or defective, which are then broken down and separated into sheet metal, wires, aluminum, brass, copper, circuit boards, light plastics, and dark plastics. After separating the materials into these categories, TAPIN then recycles them in an environmentally friendly way.
Technology Assisting People In Need’s 3 R’s – Repairable Technology, Reclaimed Parts, and Remaining Materials – are TAPIN’s belief, philosophy, and way of being environmentally friendly, through TAPIN’s own definition and way of Reducing waste, Reusing, and Recycling as much as possible. One of Technology Assisting People In Need’s goals is to have as little negative impact on the environment and TAPIN’s 3 R’s attest to this goal.
